Frequently Asked Questions

  • At Young Mermaids, the studio focuses on three core services: Custom, Alterations, and Reconstructions.

    Custom
One-of-a-kind bridal gowns and accessories designed and created from the ground up.

    Alterations
Expert bridal tailoring to ensure each gown fits beautifully and feels like it was made specifically for the bride wearing it.

    Reconstructions
Vintage wedding gowns, mother of the bride dresses, and other sentimental garments transformed into modern pieces with new life and meaning.

The primary focus of the studio is bridal, though select formalwear projects for mothers of the bride, mothers of the groom, and other special occasions are accepted as availability allows!

  • While we don’t have private parking, there is plenty of street parking throughout historic Kennett Square, as well as a parking garage nearby at 100 East Linden Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348.

Please call the studio if you need assistance carrying your dress!

  • Our studio hours are

Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM – 5 PM.
We are by appointment only. If you don’t see availability that works for you online, please contact us directly. We’ll do our best to accommodate a special appointment time!

  • We recommend booking your first fitting for your bridal gown alterations 3–5 months before your wedding for the best fit and experience. If you’d like extra peace of mind, we’re always happy to bring you in earlier and add an additional fitting.

If your dress is arriving late or you’re working within a shorter timeline, please reach out as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly. While we always do our best to accommodate based on availability, alterations needed within 8 weeks of the wedding date may incur a rush fee.

  • Please bring your actual wedding shoes and any undergarments you plan to wear with your gown. Your actual wedding shoes are required by your second fitting. That’s all you need. We’ll take care of the rest!

  • Most bridal alterations include three one hour fittings.

First fitting: Consultation and pinning to review changes and set the gown for alterations.

Second fitting: A progress check to review adjustments before final finishes.

Pick up appointment (about one month out from your wedding day): We review your bustle, have you walk in your gown, and ensure the fit feels just right! If there are any tweaks we will have your dress back to you within the week!

If needed, we may schedule an additional check closer to two weeks before the wedding to ensure everything is flawless.

Custom gowns follow a more involved timeline and typically require at least five in person fittings, including measurements, a muslin fitting, and design and fit refinements throughout production.

  • Absolutely! These are some of my absolute favorite projects.

I love working with vintage wedding gowns, mother of the bride dresses, and other sentimental pieces to create something new while preserving the story behind the original garment.

Every reconstruction project is completely unique. Some clients want to transform a gown into a rehearsal dinner dress or mini, while others are interested in creating a robe, wrap, veil, or another special keepsake. I always let the garment and the client guide the design process so the final piece feels both meaningful and wearable.

If you have a special dress tucked away in your closet, I would love to help you dream up a way to give it new life!

  • Pricing

Every project at Young Mermaids is unique, and pricing reflects the level of design, craftsmanship, and handwork involved. Whether the process includes alterations, a custom gown, or the reconstruction of a sentimental garment, transparency is a core part of the experience. Clear pricing is provided before any work begins, with no hidden fees added at the end of the process.

    Alterations

Bridal alterations begin at $550, with most standard alteration packages averaging between $650 and $850.

Packages cover the full alterations process across your scheduled fittings, including refinements made after your initial consultation to ensure the gown fits beautifully.

A $500 deposit is required at the first fitting to secure your place on the calendar, with the remaining balance due at the second fitting.

Specialty changes, custom additions, or significant structural work may increase pricing.

    Custom

Custom gowns begin at $3,000 and are priced individually based on fabrication, silhouette, and design complexity.

The process begins with a design consultation where inspiration, expectations, and construction details are reviewed. A $500 muslin fee is required to begin the design process. Once the muslin fitting is complete and all design details are finalized, the remaining balance is determined and invoiced.

    Reconstructions

Reconstruction pricing varies depending on the design, fabrication, and level of detail involved.

For more straightforward projects, such as transforming a mother of the bride gown into a cocktail dress or mini, most projects typically range from $450 to $600.

Accessories such as custom belts, wraps, robes, and keepsake pieces are priced individually based on the scope of work and materials required.

More intricate reconstructions involving significant redesign, multiple garments, or extensive handwork may exceed these starting ranges.

Because each reconstruction project is so personal, a consultation is recommended to discuss the vision and determine the best way to preserve and reimagine these meaningful garments.

Please feel free to call the studio to begin the process.

  • We accept all major credit cards through Square. A 3% processing fee applies to credit card payments, so many clients choose to pay by cash or check.

For all brides, A $500 deposit is required at your first fitting and will be applied toward your total balance.
